The #1 large School Iroquois Chiefs won their sixth straight game to stay undefeated beating the Depew Wildcats 14-7 at Depew on a field that most racetracks would call "sloppy". It was the first time in four weeks that the Chiefs took to the road and most of the players commented on the difference in atmosphere in comparison to their own Latimer Field. "I was surprised by the comments from the team as it was only three years ago that many of my players including Steve Mamak went to the Depew/Lancaster game and came back the next day and said they wish they could play under the lights in such an exciting atmoshere. Now they say that nothing beats our stadium!" "I would again like to thank Tim Shevlin, Iroquois Football Boosters, Ross Esslinger, the school administartion, and the Board of Education for turning our facilities into the best in Western New York!" remarks Coach PayneIroquois scored first on a 9-yard run by Kyle Shevlin and Shevlin converted the point after to make the score 7-0 in the second quarter. The Chiefs dominated the first two quarter but failed to convert most of their drives into points. The gained 140 yards in comparison to the Wildcats 40 yards in the first half. Depew mounted a 14 play 8 minute drive to start the second half and Mike Sanders scored on a 8-yard run to make the score 7-7 midway through the third quarter. On the next play Depew kicked the ball to the Chiefs and Kyle Shevlin raced 72-yards untouched to give the Chiefs the lead for good. It was a battle in the mud and both teams moved the ball but had a tough time getting the ball into the endzone. Junior linebacker Tommy Lewis led the Chiefs in tackles for the 7th consecutive game with 18 tackles and was all over the field limited Mike Sanders to 58-yards on the game. Fellow linebacker Tyler Brady had an outstanding game recording 12 tackles and a quarterback pressure. Nick Kakavand converted to defensive end from his linebacker position recorded 9 tackles and a quarterback sack for the Chiefs. Matt Wesolowski had 8 tackles for the Chiefs. Defensive linemen Lucas Mader and Joshua Jesonowski also had quarterback sacks Iroquois. Mader finished with 6 tackles and Jesonowski had 4 tackles and the sack. Shane Baker and Kyle Shevlin each proved to be tough for the Wildcats and each had 7 tackles for the Chiefs.
Offensively, sophomore Brandon Murie carried the bulk of the offensive as starting running back Mike Perillo was hobbled by a mild ankle sprain. Murie finished the game with 111-yards on 22 carries and Perillo ended up with 35-yards on just 6 carries for the Chiefs. Tanner Atkinson had 7-yards on 2 carries while Shevlin finished with 17-yards on just 3 carries and was 1 for 2 passing for 40-yards. Matt Wesolowski had 1 catch for 40-yards for the Chiefs. "Depew is a very good football team very well coached and it was a great non-league game for us as we prepare to try and stay undefeated and clinch the division championship and the school's first ever home playoff game as we take on the Amherst Tigers Friday Night on the turf under the lights at 7:00p.m." Coach Payne

The undefeated Iroquois Chiefs varsity football team dominates Cheektowaga in a 31-0 victory at homecoming
The Chiefs ranked #1 in the Buffalo News large School Poll have quietly won 18 out of the last 21 games and dominated the line of scrimmage in the victory against the Warriors of Cheektowaga Central. The Warriors came into the game one game behind the Chiefs and Coach Zipp stated that they were more prepared for Iroquoios than any team they played this season. Cheektowaga moved the ball early in the game but the stingy Chiefs defense managed to make big plays to keep the Warriors out of the endzone in the first half. The second half was a different story as the Chiefs dominated defensively holding Cheektowaga to 25 total yards in the second half. The Chiefs Offense was sparked by a great throw and catch from Kyle Shevlin to Tommy Lewis on the last play of the first quarter.
On the Chiefs first drive of the second quarter, iroquois' scored on a 35-yard pass from Shevlin to Wyatt Mariacher and Shevlin conected on the extra point to make the score 7-0 and the Chiefs never looked back. "At halftime we told the team that the 7-0 score did not mean anything because we knew our conditioning would take over in the second half and we could wear down the Warriors in the second half." remarks Coach Payne The Chiefs came out and scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to put away the Warriors. Iroquois outgained Cheektowaga 384-175 yards for the game.
Mike Perillo had another huge game running the footballball all over the field gaining 167-yards and a touchdown. Perillo also had one catch for 8-yards and ran a fake punt 45-yards to set up another Iroquois touchdown. Iroquois' next ponits came from the strong leg of Kyle Shevlin who kicked a 42-yard field right through the uprights to make the score 10-0. Shevlin only needs two more field goals to give the section 6 record of career field goals. Sophomore speedster Brandon Murie scored the Chiefs next touchdown on a 12-yard run up the middle untouched. Shevlin connected on the extra point to make the score 17-0 in the third quarter. The Iroquois Chiefs traveled to Pioneer to face their divisional rival and ran away with a 26-6 victory. The win moves the Chiefs to 2-0 record while the Panthers slip to 1-1. Iroquois started the game similar to last weeks opener against Williamsville East and again wore down their opponent in the second half.
Pioneer kicked off to start the game and the Panthers poochkicked the ball in and out of a Chief player to give them possession. The Panthers moved the ball down the field through the air and scored on a 2-Yard run by Matt Schwab. Iroquois stopped the two point conversion on a nice play by tackle Lucas Mader. The Chiefs fumbled on their first offensive play to give the ball back to the Panthers; but this time the Iroquois defense stiffened up and got the ball right back on an interception by Mike Perillo. On the Chiefs first play sophomore running back Brandon Murie expoded the hole opened up by the undersized Chief offensive line and ran 76-yards down the field. The Chiefs capped off the drive with a couple of powerful runs by Tommy Nolan who scored on a 2-Yard touchdown run. The extra point was blocked. The Iroquois defense shut out the Panthers in the second half and only allowed 70 Yards rushing the entire game. "We were very happy how we shut down the Pioneer rushing attack considering they outweighed us by almost 50 pounds per player. We spent most of our practice time on stopping the run. Coach Rollo did a remarkable job preparing our defense to stop the run." Remarks Coach Payne The defense also forced several turnovers including 4 interceptions, 3 of them by the versatile Kyle shevlin. Mike Perillo also had an interception for the Chiefs. "Coach Aroune (secondary Coach) was pleased with the 4 INT's, he said the Chiefs could of had as many as 6 picks on Friday Night." Coach Payne The final scoring play came on a 7-Yard run by Kyle Shevlin to put the game away in the fourth quarter. Shevlin finished the game with 65-yards rushing and passed for 155-yards on 11 of 16 pass attempts. The majority of the yards came by the legs of sophomore running back Brandon Murie. Shane Baker, Tyler Brady and Richard Pierce each had 4 tackles for the Chiefs.
The Chiefs will take their 2-0 record back home next Friay to play arch nemesis Hamburg (1-1) at 7:30 p.m. at Latimer Stadium. "These two wins were very important for us because we had to overcome adversity in both games. These games will help build the character that we will need the remainder of the season. Pioneer was a very good team and Williamsville was also a very good team as they beat Class A powerhouse Sweet Home on Saturday." Remarks Coach Payne

Iroquois Chiefs Open the 2006 Football Season:
The Iroquois Chiefs lit up the tri-town community with a bang beating Williamsville East 23-14 in front of an estimated crowd of 2200 people. Athletic Director Ross Esslinger, School superintendent Neil Rochelle, and High School Principal Dennis Kenney opened the night by thanking the Iroquois Football Booster Club and the community for doing such an outstanding job of making the dream of Friday Night Lights a reality. School Board member Terry Kunick flipped the coin to start the new tradition of Friday Night football at Latimer Stadium. After all the hoopla before the game; the Chiefs started off a bit slow against the Flames of Williamsville East and before you knew it East had a 14-0 lead on two runs by Schreiver and Miller. Iroquois got the spark they needed in the second quarter from Paul Evans who caught a perfect pass from Kyle Shevlin and raced 68 yards untouched into the endzone to the sound of fireworks as he crossed the goal line to record the first touchdown under the lights at latimer Field. "That was the kind a play our team needed to get into the flow of the game because at that point Williamsville East was controlling the tempo of the game. Pauly did a wonderful job of staring the ball into his hands and outrunning the East defenders. It gave some energy to our sidelines and the crowd to get our team going. After our first score, our defense really stiffened up and held the Flames to under 75 yards the remainder of the game. "One of the big reasons was the move we made defensively having Tommy Lewis play linebacker and moving matt Wesolowski to strong safety, and Wyatt Mariacher to free safety. " Coach Payne
Tommy Lewis led the team in tackles with 12 followed by a host of Chief defenders flying to the ball. Mike Perillo had 10 tackles and an interception, Jared Lina had 8 tackles, Nick Kakavand had 8 tackles, Matt Wesolowski had 8 tackles, Joshua Jesonowski had a huge day recording 6 tackles a quarterback sack and a fumble recovery, while Shane Baker had 5 tackles and a fumble recovery. Wyatt Mariacher playing free safety had 2 tackles and an interception for the Chiefs. Offensively, Sophomore Brandon Muriel started the season strong with 67 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. Kyle Shevlin had 62 yards rushing, 100 yards passingthrew the touchdown to Evans and ran for a 7-yard touchdown. Shevlin also kicked a 36-yard field goal and made 3 of 4 extra points. All in all Shevlin scored 18 points on the night. Paul Evans had the one remarkable catch for 68-yards. Tommy lewis had 26-yards on 3 carries for the Chiefs. "It was a great night for the community and the football program as everyone that attended will remember this night for a very long time.
The Football Coaching Staff would like to thank the board of Education, Mr. Neil Rochelle, Mr. Ross Esslinger, Mr. Dennis Kenney, the School Administrators and also Tim Shevlin and the Iroquois Football Boosters for making the dream of Friday Night Football a reality in the tri-town community. The students of Iroquois will enjoy them for the years to come. Thank You!
